Working together with a large group of organizations including Humentum, Open University, Save the Children, War Child UK, BOND, BRAC, Centre for Humanitarian Learning and Innovation, UNICEF, World Vision International, Care US, Plan International UK, and Oxfam, the Humanitarian Leadership Academy has developed a free online learning program called ‘Safeguarding Essentials’.
This brand-new program has been designed to train staff and volunteers in key safeguarding issues and scenarios. Now available to Humentum Learning Services subscribers to access directly on their LMS! The one-hour course introduces the non-negotiable safeguarding norms, guiding learners on how to recognize potential safeguarding concerns and how to report them.
The course is provided as a learning path, which includes a pre-test, the module itself, and a post-test. Learners will earn both a digital badge and a certificate of completion when they successfully complete the learning path.
Level 1 members will find a new catalog called Safeguarding and Harassment Prevention with the Safeguarding Essentials course and the Humentum Harassment Prevention course inside.
Level 2 Members can request the course by emailing support@Humentum.org and letting us know which catalog to place the course in.
You will find three SCORM files in your dispatch folder under HLA. You should download all three files and create a program or learning path in your LMS. Need help? Email firstname.lastname@example.org
Is this course for me?
The course is aimed at anyone working in the humanitarian and development sectors but is relevant to all working in organizations where safeguarding issues are a concern. The course is written at an introductory level and is modularised to facilitate easy engagement and suit practitioners in the field. It is both a pathway to understanding what safeguarding is and how you can help tackle safeguarding breaches.
Safeguarding Essentials is a self-guided and self-paced online course that is experiential, thought-provoking and rich in interactivity.
How will I benefit from this course?
On completion of this course you will:
- know the non-negotiables of conduct

- know what to do if you observe or hear testimony or rumor about another individual causing harm, exploitation or abuse
- act and report safeguarding concerns
The course is divided into 6 modules of roughly equal length, each requiring 10-15 minutes study. We recommend that you study the course in sequence the first time, but after this, it is up to you how you revisit the materials. There is a benefit in just dipping in and out to reacquaint yourself with concepts, facts, figures, and stories at any time.
The modules are:
1. What is safeguarding?
2. Safeguarding communities at risk
3. How do safeguarding issues arise?
4. Mythbusting – true or false?
5. How you can help?
6. Be ready to report
